ANNULÉE - Visite de la Fondation Carzou
Presentation
Composed of a superb neoclassical chapel entirely decorated by the painter Jean Carzou (1907-2000) on the theme of the Apocalypse of modern times and a former convent that has been converted into exhibition rooms, the Carzou Foundation aims to promote Carzou’s work but also to be a place of reflection and cultural animation.
Installed in the church of the former Convent of the Presentation, the Carzou Foundation is a unique place, born of the combined desire of the painter Jean Carzou and the town of Manosque, to create in this beautiful neo-classical architecture a striking work of art for the 20th century.
Indeed, since 1991, the chapel has housed the Carzou Foundation, a cultural centre recognised as of public interest, based on the legacy work of Carzou – the Apocalypse ;
‘In the Apocalypse I wanted to represent the cycle of human experience.’ Jean Carzou, a painter of Armenian origin, born in 1907, died in 2000, was considered in the fifties as one of the ten most influential artists of his generation, thanks to his powerful, vigorous style of drawing, and his visionary talent.
The foundation that bears his name has thus as its aim to promote his work, but also to be a major exhibition venue for the art of our time. To do this, it puts its magnificent adjacent rooms at the disposal of highly ambitious projects – rooms which constitute an exhibition space unique in the department.
The Carzou Foundation is fully a part of the cultural landscape of the town of Manosque, and the Durance, Luberon, Verdon area, which has supported it financially since its opening to the public.
